AZKOITIA Jorge Oteiza's basque pelota court
AZKOITIA
Azkoitia it is a town located in the
mountain chain of Izarraitz in the
valley of Urola. It is to 57km of San Sebastian. It is 113m high of the sea. This town was founded
in 1331. It has 11.563 inhabitants. The major is Javier Zubizarreta. The patron
is the virgin of Urrategi.
There you can visit the basque pelota
court Jorge Oteiza. It is a modern one. The outside is white, on the left part
it is a big triangle and in the entrance it has a wooden wall. In the centre, it has a shape of a box and
with the right side it makes a “L” form.
This basque pelota court was designed by Antton Mendizabal and Carlos
Cebaltos. In total there are 7 courts because they symbolize the 7 basque
territories.
Jorge Oteiza was born 21st october 1908 in Orio and he died 9th april
2003 in San Sebastian. His art is in his museum in Alzuza. Jorge has written many books like: “Libro de los Plagios”, ”Quosque Tandem”, “Oteiza’s
selected writings”, “Ley de los cambios”
and “Itziar: elegía, y otros poemas” for example. He did abstract art.
